Historian Slams RRR For Portraying British In ‘Silly’ & Wrong Manner, Gets Schooled By Netizens
“RRR” (Rise Roar Revolt) is one of the most successful movies of all times in the Indian film industry and despite the fact that it got released in the month of March, people are still talking about it and are praising the direction and acting performances.
The flick is directed by SS Rajamouli and stars some big names of the industry such as Ram Charan, Junior NTR, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran and others. “RRR” was made on the budget of Rs. 550 crores which made it the most expensive movie of the country and though it was made in Telugu, its dubbed versions were released in other languages as well and it was a pan-India success.
The flick is set in the period of 1920s when India was under the British rule. The story revolves around two leading characters played by Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Junior NTR) who were two real-life revolutionaries and how they fought back against the atrocities of the British rule.
The movie is getting loved all over the world but there is a professor of French history at the University of Cambridge who feels that the manner in which the Britishers have been portrayed is silly as nothing of this sort has happened in reality.
The name of the professor is Robert Tombs and his article is published in The Spectator in which he has also slammed the digital platform Netfix for promoting “RRR”. In his opinion, showing the British officers committing atrocities or crime in that era is a sign of ignorance or it is deliberate dishonesty on the part of makers because as per him, the Indians were ruled by the Indians under the British supervision. He has also written that showing English people as villains is very easy in such movies but they (Britishers) should not accept or believe such stories as they are false and don’t even need to feel apologetic for such things as they never happened.
The article was shared by a Twitter handle Coffee House with the caption, “The British have long been fair game as film villains. But Netflix’s blockbuster RRR takes things too far. Robert Tombs”

As the tweet went viral, the professor got slammed by not just the Indians but some foreign nationals as well and several people even schooled him about history. Check out some of the selected reactions:

While in the 700 years before British Empire rule, there had been a major famine every 50 years in India, during Company (EIC) rule this jumped to one every six years. Once the Crown officially took over in 1858, there was a big famine every 2 years!

The British Empire was basically one of the biggest forces for evil in human history and their apologists get mad whenever it's depicted as such c https://t.co/0wM7fzC45P

As a Brit myself… Yep it was incredibly evil. What we did to other countries has to be taught in British Schools

Both the freedom fighters in the movie are real life heroes that existed and fought to free this country from those Brits. What is shown in the movie about the Britishers is 100% accurate yet not even the friction is shown.. there's so much more of their brutality. https://t.co/c49MpfqY72

The British are not just villains in movies, they’re also villains in The Real World so this is probably the most realistic part of the movie

It’s quite surprising that all such statements have come from a professor of History, isn’t it? What is your take on this matter? Share with us.
