The series was hosted by India and it needed to win the BGT 2023 by 4-0 or 3-1 in order to ensure its place in the finals of the WTC but the Aussies made things difficult for India by winning the third test match. Things became more difficult for the Indian team as the Aussies batted brilliantly in the first innings of the fourth test match and it almost became impossible for the Indians to defeat Australia.

However even before the fourth test match ended in a draw, New Zealand helped India in confirming its seat in the WTC finals by defeating the Sri Lankan team on the last ball of the first test match. Sri Lanka needed to defeat New Zealand by 2-0 in order to play the WTC final but with this defeat, SL lost all the chance to become the finalist.

This is the second consecutive time that India will play the WTC finals, earlier it played the finals of the inaugural WTC 2019-21 under the leadership of Virat Kohli and India lost it to New Zealand.
