Abhimanyu Mithun Slams RCB’s Selection Criteria, Points Out Lack Of Local Talent In RCB Team

One of the biggest benefits of the Indian T20 league – Indian Premier League is that it helps local boys in getting international exposure as they get a chance to play with and share dressing room with the international cricketers. Usually all the franchises include a good number of local players in their squad but this doesn’t seem to be the case with Royal Challengers Bangalore in the current scenario.

The former Indian cricketer Abhimanyu Mithun who also played for RCB feels that the Bangalore franchise should give more opportunities to the local cricketers from the present Karnataka team.

In the inaugural edition of the IPL, Rahul Dravid led RCB had 10 Karnataka cricketers, in 2009 when RCB was led by Anil Kumble, the team had 17 Karnataka players but in 2016, when RCB played the finals under Virat Kohli’s leadership, the team had only 4 Karnataka cricketers. If we talk about the current scenario, Faf du Plessis led RCB has only 2 Karnataka players – Manoj Bhandage and Vyshak Vijay Kumar, the latter being the replacement of Rajat Patidar who got ruled out due to injury.

Recently Abhimanyu Mithun who played 16 matches for RCB gave an interview in which he said that he is not sure whether RCB wants to have local players because he has seen that whenever the team has won many trophies, there weren’t many Karnataka players in the team. He further said that in the initial days, there used to be more than 5-6 Karnataka cricketers in RCB but now they have just 2 as they are taking Karnataka cricketers just for the sake of taking local players.

He adds that he has no idea as to why the scouts are bringing cricketers from other states. He further says that the scouts should look more for local talent because when a local cricketer plays for home team, there is an emotional connect because of which he tries to give his best. Mithun goes on to say that there is a good amount of talent in the Karnataka cricket team and RCB should give them more chances and make a strong side.
